Turner Fisheries at Westin

Tuesday, May 24

Dr.A and I enjoyed a rare opportunity to have lunch together on a weekday at a restaurant in Back Bay, Turner Fisheries, as he was attending a week long conference held at a hotel in Back Bay.

Turner Fisheries' clam chowder (behind the Boston cream pie in the photo) was voted best at the Annual Chowderfest three times in a row (1985, 1986, 1987) and has been in the Chowderfest Hall of Fame. It was good indeed.

Glassblowing at MfA

Sunday, May 8

On Mother's Day, we usually go see the Duckling Parade (see the post last year), but this year was different. We went to the museum to see glassblowing.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is currently holding an exhibition called "Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass" that introduces the works of glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, and glassblowing demonstrations were scheduled on the 7th and 8th as a part of promotional events. (Unfortunately the one on 7th was canceled due to thunderstorms, so this was the last chance.)

When finishing up, however, the fish suddenly came off of the rod and shattered into pieces, causing everyone to spontaneously yell...

Return of Swans Parade

Tuesday, May 3

In the beginning of May, the swan couple Romeo and Juliet return to their old residence, the Public Garden Duck Pond, after spending the long winter in a zoo.  Seeing the swans back in the pond is a big sign, for us, that spring has officially begun in Boston, in addition to the buds sprouting and flowers blooming.

Having missed their home coming parade for past 3 years, I finally found the schedule in advance, which seems always on a weekday, and got to see this cute annual event.

Too many people (from the media, I guess) surrounded the swans, blocking my view to see the moment of release.

The Night of Osama bin Laden's Death

Sunday, May 1

As we watched the local news reported a crowd was headed to Boston Common. We became curious and despite the stiff legs we got from walking a lot in the museum, we decided to go see what was happening. Here is what we saw.

Crowd on and around the gazebo.
Mostly college students, chanting all sorts of patriotic phrases and occasionally singing something like "Ole ole ole" and of course, the National Anthem. Some of them must have been journalism majors as they were carrying professional video cameras.

USA!

Art in Bloom 2011

Sunday, May 1

One of our absolute favorite events in Boston was held again this year at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from April 30 through May 2.

During this event floral interpretations of about 50 selected art pieces are created by local garden clubs and are displayed throughout the museum.  There are additional flower arrangements created by professional floral designers scattered throughout as well. In addition there are also a number of tours, lectures, workshops and other special events, notably a tea room is temporarily set up one of the large galleries where many large European paintings are displayed. Just outside the museum vendors are set up where one can purchase flowers in pots and bouquets.

Spring Blossom (May)

Once most of the cherry blossoms are over, tulips, apple flowers, and another kind of cherry blossoms come next.

The buds of apple flowers are dark pink then the color turns pale pink to white at full bloom. It might look most gorgeous when half the buds are still left on the tree.

Spring in Boston (April)

After enduing a long cold winter, we are always rewarded with fantastic views filled with flowers and this was the scenery I was determined to introduce when I started this blog. Each season has its own beauty, but this short-lived, yet lively and exciting time of the year is somewhat special to me.
