Day 4: Hanging out at the Liberty Hotel
Tuesday, July 6. This was the last day of their stay. So sad, it ends. Dr.A was going to cut the work short and come back to have lunch with us at another restaurant of the hotel. The temperature was going to reach the record high 100F and they had issued the heat advisory, so we decided not to go anywhere but wait for him in the hotel. We thought it was a good opportunity to go up to the top floor. I did not take a good photo, but from there you could see many of the Boston landmarks pretty well.
Scampo (means "escape")
Excellent foods! The last plate has a happy birthday message on it because of Dr.A's upcoming birthday. The interior of the restaurant was very neat, too. I thought that it had some 60s taste, orange, beige, and curvy, but I could be absolutely wrong. We went back to the lobby to just sit back until they had to leave for the flight. I regret that I fell into sleep for a while, I think the sangria did its trick...
The 4th of July holidays were again full of fun! Thanks to the guests we have been able to have entertaining and joyful summers, given chances to discover something new in New England.

Day 3: Cape Cod
(Sandwich, Corporation Beach, Chatham, Orleans)
Monday, July 5. We headed to the Cape Cod. We already had a reservation at a restaurant in Orleans for dinner, so we drove in that direction without any destination in mind. The first stop was Sandwich. Dr.A and I had a craving for the same sandwich we had with Dr.A's father so we took them to the Dan'l Webster Inn. There, we were told that that we could easily find Moxie (see wiki if you are curious), a soda that Dr.A's step-father had wanted to try, in a grocery store . Soon we found Moxie bottles in an convenience store nearby...Apparently its taste is between Dr.Pepper and Root Beer, plus some bitterness. Agh, two sodas I sincerely hate. I have not tried it yet but I have a strong feeling I will not like it.
Our next stop was the Corporation Beach in Dennis. It was not surprising to see many people there, considering the temperature that day (it was above 90F, I think). While Dr.A's step-father enjoyed people watching from the parking lot, three of us walked on the beach. The sand was burning hot...I tried to walk barefoot, but just could not. The sand must have burned all the germs on my sole, IF there were any! Even the water was warm.
We dropped by Chatham shortly to look around and shop. Hydrangeas were at their peak on Cape Cod.
To be honest I fell asleep in the car and slept all the way from Chatham to Orleans and no memory of this part of the trip. I woke up and found that we had arrived at the restaurant.
The Nauset Beach Club
The food was really good. One thing to note though is that I had read the review of this place beforehand and some of them pointed out this restaurant's "attitude" and the large proportion of senior citizens, which turned out to be very accurate. We were literally surrounded by old people who were probably very rich, and the manager was too busy kissing their wrinkled "hands" (I quoted Dr.A here) to come over to our table despite our request to talk to him. But then again the food was good.
It was the end of the holidays which meant that the traffic was going to be hell. At one point we saw a man running on the side of the freeway; the traffic was so bad that we suspected that he might beat us back to Boston. I must thank Dr.A for driving while I slept.

Day 2 Part 2: July 4th Evening and Night
At 3pm, we left the hotel, chairs in our hands. The Celebration would not start until 8pm but we needed a good spot. People were everywhere inside and outside the Oval and along the Charles River, and they kept pouring in. We managed to squeeze our chairs amongst other chairs and blankets. We took turns to go outside the Oval to get drinks, kettle corns (a must), hot dogs (another must), and some other munchies. Though it was hot, sky was clear with slight breeze, promising good fireworks. I noticed that Dr.A and I left our camera at the hotel room. I could not believe it, but oh well, we did not want to go back to the hotel just for the camera and cell phone cameras would do anyway.
In front of the Hatchshell about 1 hour before the show
A view from our spot
During the show
It started out with Star Spangled Banner followed by a F-15 Fighter Wing Flyover; just like every other year. The host was again Craig Ferguson, and the guest star was Toby Keith, who I unfortunately had not known at all until this day. I saw some people wearing Toby Keith T-shirt and heard girls screaming at him, he must be very popular. The 1812 Overture with canons was great and fun, and the fireworks were fantastic. 4th of July can be a consuming day but it is worth it!
After the Show
The streets were flooded with people. We all went back to the Liberty Hotel and decided to celebrate a little longer with cocktails at the bar. We were having this cute cocktail named Spatini, a combination of coconut and raspberry flavor. Then the hamburgers showed up. Dr.A's step-father had ordered the tiny hamburgers for us, but none of us expected that they came in dozens. It was really tasty, though. I got so drunk with the cocktail and just left the bar with Dr.A's mom for the room, wondering what on earth was keeping Dr.A and his step-father in the bar. They were patiently waiting for the waitress so they could pay the check, of course... I slept very well that night.

Day 2 Part 1: July 4th Morning
This is the day, and Boston is the place to be on July 4th..., actually the celebration, called Harbor Fest, usually starts at the end of June and lasts until July 5th. During this period you can see various events such as music concerts, historical reenactment, and Chowder Fest.
Among the events held on July 4th was the Reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Old State House in the morning, but we skipped it because our priority was firmly set to get.... wristbands! The area in front of the Hatch Shell where the Boston Pops perform that night is called the Oval, and they close the Oval in the evening, limiting the access to only those who have this wristband. Critical! We got there at about 8:30am and there were already people lining up. In fact many of them camp out from the morning to the night to secure their spot once inside the Oval.
People starting camping (9:30am)
We had brunch in haste and headed to the Charlestown Navy Yard to see the USS Constitution Turnaround. Due to the misunderstanding of the schedule, we arrived there much too early...Old Ironsides had just left the Yard, meaning we would have to wait more than 1 hour until it came back. Luckily, this year's Harbor Fest was in collaboration with the Boston Navy Week, a Navy version of Marine Week Boston (see the post in June) and the USS Hawes was there for the public.
Figuring that it would be a great way to kill time, we lined up for the free tour. We waited and waited. And waited. After standing for more than 40 minutes under the sun without any shades whatsoever, watching people coming out but never going in to the ship, and talking with the family behind us, we found out that they would take only 15 people at once and it would be a 45 minute tour. This meant that we were guaranteed to be stuck in the ship when the USS Constitution returned...OK, we abandoned the line. After a short while the USS Constitution came back, led by a fire boat. We then went back to the hotel to get some rest and prepare for the night's event (cont.).

4th of July Journal (1)
It's been a while since the last update. Dr.A and I have been feeling a bit empty after all our guests left...but then the true reason of the lack of updates is because I am a master procrastinator. Dr.A's mother and his step-father visited Boston for the 4th of July, we had a fully fun and gourmet food loaded week with them. One quick note. This is the hottest summer since we moved here and during their entire stay the temperature kept hovering around 90F. I felt sorry for anybody coming from Northern CA to this weather: scorching hot and humid.
Day 1: Energy Preservation for the 4th of July
Saturday, July 3rd. Based on the experience from the last year, we knew that the next day would be a long day so we did not plan to go anywhere far, just enjoy the neighborhood, and besides, Dr.A had just flew back from San Diego and arrived at 5 am. He needed a nap, however short. So we started our day from a late brunch at the Clink, a restaurant of the Liberty Hotel, where Dr.A's mom and step-dad were staying. The Liberty Hotel, once the Charles Street Jail, has a jail theme everywhere and the restaurant was no exception. I tried an interesting dish, Eggs Benedict, with poached duck eggs but forgot to take a photo. In case anyone is curious the duck eggs looked just like chicken eggs...and tasted like them too...
After we fed our stomachs with tasty food we drove to Target to get much needed chairs for the next day's event. Last year three of us sat on the bank of the river on a tiny old towel for more than 5 hours and it took its toll. Our mission for the day was completed once we procured the chairs, and the rest of the day went like this: we headed to Dr.A's office in a literally packed car, and there took photos and had a lecture from Dr.A (oh my god), washed the car, shopped at the Harvard Coop, had frozen yogurt at the best frozen yogurt shop in Cambridge (in my opinion), and finally came back to the hotel.
For dinner, we had a reservation at Cafe Fleuri at the Langham Hotel in downtown Boston. We had high expectations but.... Not that it was bad, but because of the pretentious appearance and the fact that it appeared on the Food Network, the bar was raised too high I suppose. Stomachs nearly bursting, we walked a while to help digest the food; Dr.A's mom and I got a bomb from a pigeon, then came back home to rest.
