Return of Swans Parade

Tuesday, May 3

In the beginning of May, the swan couple Romeo and Juliet return to their old residence, the Public Garden Duck Pond, after spending the long winter in a zoo.  Seeing the swans back in the pond is a big sign, for us, that spring has officially begun in Boston, in addition to the buds sprouting and flowers blooming.

Having missed their home coming parade for past 3 years, I finally found the schedule in advance, which seems always on a weekday, and got to see this cute annual event.

Art in Bloom 2011

Sunday, May 1

One of our absolute favorite events in Boston was held again this year at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from April 30 through May 2.

During this event floral interpretations of about 50 selected art pieces are created by local garden clubs and are displayed throughout the museum.  There are additional flower arrangements created by professional floral designers scattered throughout as well. In addition there are also a number of tours, lectures, workshops and other special events, notably a tea room is temporarily set up one of the large galleries where many large European paintings are displayed. Just outside the museum vendors are set up where one can purchase flowers in pots and bouquets.

Back to the Light

I have neglected this blog so long, but now that Spring has arrived in Boston we have been more active and more posting should be coming here. Before I post Spring photos, however, first things first...I have posted the Winter photos that I intended to post months ago!

The first storm hit right after Christmas: December 26, 2010
We ventured out to catch the wrath of the snowstorm after midnight.

The New Year's Eve
It became unprecedentedly warm around the New Year's Eve, so much so that a lot of snow from the storm had melted away. Ice sculptures were also melting (you can see that the number 2 of 2011 is partially missing from the top of the ice plate). No heavy jacket or thick gloves needed this year. Such a huge change from a few years back, when the windchill dropped below single digits (Fahrenheit) so we could stay outside no longer than 15 minutes, even with full winter gear.

At the last minute we decided to go somewhere different this year for the countdown, and headed to the waterfront (where the aquarium is). We did not quite make it, but managed to see the fireworks.

The surface of the block of snow on cars gets icy due to the cold temperature, creating a shell like this. Digging the car out is always a pain, but this year was truly back-breaking.

Boston Massacre Reenactment

5 people shot!
Massacre!

Saturday, March 5
We missed the cute version done by kids earlier in the day, but here are some photos from the night of the reenactment of a milestone in American history.

Spectators surrounding the Old State House
Nice seat kid!
The audience was actively participating in the event, adding some tension, I believe...
Words thrown from these participants included:
"Lobster back!"
"Shoot him" "Shoot him now!" and of course, the chanting of
"USA! USA! USA!"

Unfortunately our view was mostly blocked... (we could hear the words of actors thanks to microphones).

My desperate attempt to see what was going on with the camera.

Merry Christmas! ...and Happy...Belated Halloween...

I found an entry about Halloween in Beacon Hill that I could not update before I left for Japan and I almost chucked it since it felt too out of date, but the pictures are still fun to look at. The rich people in the community put quite a serious effort into this event. I created an online album so if you are interested, go take a look!

The entry written way back in November
This year fall has being leaving rather quickly and we felt it on the night of Halloween. It was reportedly the coldest Halloween in many years ...but that did not discourage little monsters to hunt candy. I finally managed to gather the photos of Halloween in Beacon Hill, the best Trick-or-Treating spot in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe. The residents put a lot of efforts and the reputation is deserved. In fact, while walking through a huge crowd of kids AND adults in costumes, we heard somebody say, "wow, it [Halloween] must be a huge pressure for the residents!"

Summer Memories

Fall has come and the temperature is dropping rapidly. Here are some random photos from this summer that I did not have a chance to put up here before.

There was a twist in this tragedy...
Later it was revealed that the people at De Luca's Market had collected food products from the site of the fire and sold them at its branch in Back Bay! .... Apparently they had violated some health and safety regulations in the past, too. I don't think I am buying anything from De Luca's anymore...

Hub on Wheels

Sunday, September 26

We warmed up at home after the free concert then walked out to go to the Quincy Market to do some shopping. On the way, we ran into the bike race on the street.

We watched the race for a while standing at the corner (about the spot in front of the tree on the left in the first photo), and right after we left there (maybe 10 seconds), we heard huge noise behind us. We turned around and saw a bicyclist had crashed into almost exactly where we were. I don't know how to describe it, but it seemed he crashed straight into the edge of the orange iron fence from his head/face first in a way that somehow the helmet did not help at all...

The fence was detached from the others and its end was vertically between his legs. Dr.A saw a gash around and above his eye. When he started to move blood started pouring out. He was conscious at least but wailing... I don't think I have seen a person with such a big injury in person before. It scared me to be honest. Soon the medical team ran to him. We wonder if he hurt his eye badly, but all we can do is just to hope he is okay.
