Turner Fisheries at Westin

Tuesday, May 24

Dr.A and I enjoyed a rare opportunity to have lunch together on a weekday at a restaurant in Back Bay, Turner Fisheries, as he was attending a week long conference held at a hotel in Back Bay.

Turner Fisheries' clam chowder (behind the Boston cream pie in the photo) was voted best at the Annual Chowderfest three times in a row (1985, 1986, 1987) and has been in the Chowderfest Hall of Fame. It was good indeed.

Petit Robert Bistro

(Please scroll down for English)

Creamy Lobster Bisque

I forgot the name, I think it was Cod with Crab Meat Sauce

Again, no memory of the name of this dish. Short Rib something... It was somewhat similar to beef stew.

Apple Pie
One Giant Profit Roll

Monday, October 11

The 11th was my birthday, and Dr.A took me to a nice dinner at Petit Robert Bistro, a casual French restaurant that I had wanted to try out for a while. We chose the one in Kenmore, near Fenway Park, out of the three branches in Boston. It was Columbus Day so we could leave early and enjoy the scenery of Public Garden on the way to the T station.

Romeo and Juliet, the swan couple, are still around. Soon after Fall is over they will be moved to the zoo in order to go through Winter.

In front of the restaurant was a miniature Eiffel Tower. Unmistakably French. This is not an overly expensive restaurant that offers reasonable dishes, but since this was my birthday we decided to go for a course menu. The lobster bisque burned our tongue a bit but it tasted excellent. We were already feeling full when we finished our main entree but figured that there should be a room for dessert, and oh so we were wrong.

Gigantic! An apple pie the size of a slice of a large pizza! An enormous profit roll that I bet the real profit roll does not resemble at all!  A mountain of ice cream sitting between puffs coated with lava of chocolate. Where did the delicateness of previous dishes go...? What happened to the "Petit" part of the bistro....? An air of a French bistro was swiftly taken over by that of an American diner.

We suffered the almost-exploding-stomach but it was a fun dinner anyway. We will happily go back to have the lobster bisque again.

Saint Anthony's Feast

We have had several very hot days in the last few months, and now we feel that summer is leaving quickly... the temperature has been staying around 65F recently, and there is a hint of leaves changing their colors.

August 28

On the last Saturday of August, when it was still hot, we drove by the North End and saw a crowd and tents. A brief search on the internet at home revealed that it was Saint Anthony's Feast, a 3 day celebration that has been held in North End since 1919, now the largest Italian-street festival in New England. The main event, which was going to be on the 29th, is called Grand Procession of Anthony, which people carry the statue of St.Anthony of Padua throughout the streets of North End for 10 hours.

I personally have no knowledge of Saint Anthony or the history behind this whole thing, but as far as I could see on its official website, the festival looked huge and lively. Apparently people all over the country come to join this event. We also found out that they offer entertainment such as live music and fireworks. We went to check them out.

We saw a group of people carrying the picture of St.Anthony with a music band in the middle of the main street. It was not a parade. While these people, and onlookers, were stopping the traffic, cars waited patiently.

At the main site consisting of several streets, various tents lined up and there was a huge crowd. We went further down a street, and at one point it was so packed I got scared it might cause a panic. I could see that some tents were selling unusually gorgeous meals like lobster rolls and octopus/squid salad, representing the nature of North End where lots of restaurants gather, but we were just desperate to get out. We managed to buy some fried dough and left the area.

We had heard that there would be fireworks at 9pm, so we headed to the place in time, waited and waited. No fireworks. Finally we gave up and walked away, and after a while, guess what? Behind us, we heard fireworks going! We could see most of it but we were upset that we left the best spot to see them.

Sunday August 29

We came back to North End to see the procession in the afternoon. We figured that the church where the procession begins would be madly crowded (it is in the main area), so decided to wander till we met the statue. No luck. We ate at our favorite restaurant (! music turns on at the index page) and came back.

Octopus salad
Potatoes, celery & cherry tomatoes
(Wait, I don't see cherry tomatoes...)

Special of the Day (It was touch spicy)
Squid ink pasta, lobster tail, shrimp, tomatoes

Penne Puttanesca
Tomatoes, capers, olives & anchovies salsa

Oishii Sushi Bar

Saturday, August 21

I have known for 2 years that there is a sushi bar that people are raving over, and we finally decided to try it out. It is in a suburban area called Chestnut Hill which is about a 25 minute ride on the Greenline T. On its wall were many "Best of..." certificates given by various gourmet magazines, proving their high reviews. It is a very tiny restaurant...only one table and about 10 seats at the counter. I have heard that sometimes it takes more than an hour to get seated if crowded, but luckily it took no time for us to get our seats at the counter, probably because we got there before 5pm.

On my right, 2 women. The one seated further away seemed incredibly relaxed, leaning over the counter, resting her head on her hand, and giving a speech about something loudly. No chance for the other woman next to me to even think about inserting a word. On the left in front of Dr.A, who sat at the corner, were 3 boys. Literally they all looked like 15-16 years old. This is not a cheap restaurant....how in the h.. I forced myself to avert my glance and looked into the menu.

There were plenty of choices, including dishes we don't see so often such as Foie Gras sushi and Lobster tempura sushi. After a while we choose these:

Hamachi Cone (basically a roll)

Salmon Sashimi with Yuzu Honey

Tokyo Style Soft Shell Crab Roll

I do not know why they call this Tokyo style, maybe because of the sweet sauce, but it was tasty nonetheless. The white wrapping is a very thinly sliced daikon: a kind of radish.

Super Deluxe Sushi Platter

Oh my god, at end the lady was still talking and her companion still hadn't spoken.  The boys had left, and a group of 6 or so came to the nearby table. One of them with a British accent started giving his theories about good sushi and sushi bars loudly and without a pause. ...Is he seriously teaching his friends what sushi is, in front of 4 sushi chefs? ...I wish, at the very least, that he could pronounce "edamame" correctly.

Anyway the sushi was great. I thought they could chill the sushi a bit more, but we are definitely going back. On the return trip, we enjoyed walking and took some pictures of the Chustnut Hill T station.

Troquet

I did not think it was possible but I have pushed my mastery of the art of procrastination even further than before. I have several updates to do.

The first and probably the best of all the events we've had recently is the dinner at Troquet on Saturday, July 31. Troquet is the best restaurant we have ever been to in Boston, they serve absolutely fantastic food. We found that last year it received a "platinum plate", the best honor given by the local TV program which introduces restaurants all over New England, and they surely deserve it.

Unfortunately having dinner at Troquet is not cheap and we are not able to come to this place as often as we like, but on every lucky occasion Dr.A and I ate here, we felt that it was worth paying every penny. This time, we had a wonderful full-course dinner with wine thanks to Dr.A's mother and step father, who gave us a gift certificate as a birthday gift to Dr.A. Yes, I was a total free rider, and a happy one.

Appetizer
New Zealand Langoustines
feuille de bric, cucumber and Champagne mango chutney

Spanish Octopus Escabeche
fennel, sweet peppers and arbequina olive oil

Entree
Nantucket Sea Scallops
Asparagus, flowering herbs, morels and crème fraiche

Oops, too blurry.
A Duck dish that I could no longer find the name on the menu online

 Dessert
Honey Crisp Peach Tarte Tatin
candied walnuts, vanilla ice cream and sweet peach puree

Milk Chocolate Truffle Tart
crusted hazelnuts, banana ice cream and caramel sauce

Everything was just great, I especially liked the octopus salad and duck dish. They were unbelievable.

4th of July Journal (5)

Day 4: Hanging out at the Liberty Hotel

Tuesday, July 6. This was the last day of their stay. So sad, it ends. Dr.A was going to cut the work short and come back to have lunch with us at another restaurant of the hotel. The temperature was going to reach the record high 100F and they had issued the heat advisory, so we decided not to go anywhere but wait for him in the hotel. We thought it was a good opportunity to go up to the top floor. I did not take a good photo, but from there you could see many of the Boston landmarks pretty well.

Scampo (means "escape")

Excellent foods! The last plate has a happy birthday message on it because of Dr.A's upcoming birthday. The interior of the restaurant was very neat, too. I thought that it had some 60s taste, orange, beige, and curvy, but I could be absolutely wrong. We went back to the lobby to just sit back until they had to leave for the flight. I regret that I fell into sleep for a while, I think the sangria did its trick...

The 4th of July holidays were again full of fun! Thanks to the guests we have been able to have entertaining and joyful summers, given chances to discover something new in New England.

4th of July Journal (4)

Day 3: Cape Cod
(Sandwich, Corporation Beach, Chatham, Orleans)

Monday, July 5. We headed to the Cape Cod. We already had a reservation at a restaurant in Orleans for dinner, so we drove in that direction without any destination in mind. The first stop was Sandwich. Dr.A and I had a craving for the same sandwich we had with Dr.A's father so we took them to the Dan'l Webster Inn. There, we were told that that we could easily find Moxie (see wiki if you are curious), a soda that Dr.A's step-father had wanted to try, in a grocery store . Soon we found Moxie bottles in an convenience store nearby...Apparently its taste is between Dr.Pepper and Root Beer, plus some bitterness. Agh, two sodas I sincerely hate. I have not tried it yet but I have a strong feeling I will not like it.

Our next stop was the Corporation Beach in Dennis. It was not surprising to see many people there, considering the temperature that day (it was above 90F, I think). While Dr.A's step-father enjoyed people watching from the parking lot, three of us walked on the beach. The sand was burning hot...I tried to walk barefoot, but just could not. The sand must have burned all the germs on my sole, IF there were any! Even the water was warm.

We dropped by Chatham shortly to look around and shop. Hydrangeas were at their peak on Cape Cod.

To be honest I fell asleep in the car and slept all the way from Chatham to Orleans and no memory of this part of the trip. I woke up and found that we had arrived at the restaurant.

The Nauset Beach Club

The food was really good. One thing to note though is that I had read the review of this place beforehand and some of them pointed out this restaurant's "attitude" and the large proportion of senior citizens, which turned out to be very accurate. We were literally surrounded by old people who were probably very rich, and the manager was too busy kissing their wrinkled "hands" (I quoted Dr.A here) to come over to our table despite our request to talk to him. But then again the food was good.

It was the end of the holidays which meant that the traffic was going to be hell. At one point we saw a man running on the side of the freeway; the traffic was so bad that we suspected that he might beat us back to Boston. I must thank Dr.A for driving while I slept.

4th of July Journal (1)

It's been a while since the last update. Dr.A and I have been feeling a bit empty after all our guests left...but then the true reason of the lack of updates is because I am a master procrastinator. Dr.A's mother and his step-father visited Boston for the 4th of July, we had a fully fun and gourmet food loaded week with them. One quick note. This is the hottest summer since we moved here and during their entire stay the temperature kept hovering around 90F. I felt sorry for anybody coming from Northern CA to this weather: scorching hot and humid.

Day 1: Energy Preservation for the 4th of July

Saturday, July 3rd. Based on the experience from the last year, we knew that the next day would be a long day so we did not plan to go anywhere far, just enjoy the neighborhood, and besides, Dr.A had just flew back from San Diego and arrived at 5 am. He needed a nap, however short. So we started our day from a late brunch at the Clink, a restaurant of the Liberty Hotel, where Dr.A's mom and step-dad were staying. The Liberty Hotel, once the Charles Street Jail, has a jail theme everywhere and the restaurant was no exception. I tried an interesting dish, Eggs Benedict, with poached duck eggs but forgot to take a photo. In case anyone is curious the duck eggs looked just like chicken eggs...and tasted like them too...

After we fed our stomachs with tasty food we drove to Target to get much needed chairs for the next day's event. Last year three of us sat on the bank of the river on a tiny old towel for more than 5 hours and it took its toll. Our mission for the day was completed once we procured the chairs, and the rest of the day went like this: we headed to Dr.A's office in a literally packed car, and there took photos and had a lecture from Dr.A (oh my god), washed the car, shopped at the Harvard Coop, had frozen yogurt at the best frozen yogurt shop in Cambridge (in my opinion), and finally came back to the hotel.

For dinner, we had a reservation at Cafe Fleuri at the Langham Hotel in downtown Boston. We had high expectations but.... Not that it was bad, but because of the pretentious appearance and the fact that it appeared on the Food Network, the bar was raised too high I suppose. Stomachs nearly bursting, we walked a while to help digest the food; Dr.A's mom and I got a bomb from a pigeon, then came back home to rest.
