Saturday, June 12
We were walking to get to our car and ran into Boson Pride Parade this afternoon. It was huge, blocking several streets and having many onlookers despite heavy rains. In fact, according to the news and its website, this year is the 40th anniversary of this apparently famous Gay Pride parade. We had no idea such a major event was taking place today... I actually wonder how other people always seem to know what events happen when and where.

Thunderstorm and Tornado Watch
Boston was under a tornado watch on Sunday night, as well as the previous night.
Thunderstorms are a Boston summer signature, or at least that's how I consider, so it was not surprising we had pouring rain with thunder and lightening after we came back from the Beacon Hill Art Walk (see previous post). But a tornado?! Two nights in a row? It was hard to believe. This must have been the first tornado watch in many years. No tornado was seen fortunately, but I could not help imagining red bricks flying away in a spiral from buildings...
Aftermath of the storm at Boston Common. Branches were everywhere.

Beacon Hill Art Walk
On Sunday, June 6, we went to see the Beacon Hill Art Walk, an annual event that takes place in Beacon Hill, Boston. Artists display/sell their work throughout the neighborhood and what's great about this event is that Beacon Hill residents open up their private gardens and alleyways for this occasion, so we can see some of the "secret" places that are usually off limits to us. Some gardens are only accessible through a normal looking door which you would never imagine leading to a backyard.
We were looking forward to seeing these gardens more than anything actually, however, due to the approaching thunderstorm they had called Rainy Day locations, meaning no outside displays, except for a few places under some kind of roof, like the rail bridge.
Hill House (an old fire house) for inside display

A side room of the Church of the Advent was also used as a display location. We have been curious about the interior of this church so we took the opportunity to see the chapel. Somebody was playing the pipe organ at that time. It was great, it felt like we were inside a large music instrument.

TV discovery
Summer TV is boring... (especially when you only have the major networks)...we are not the greatest fan of the fiery chef yelling that chickens taste like rubber or an over confident guy with a funny mustache who thinks he can dance or a bizarre group of people performing music that seems not to fit in any genre, who makes us almost feel sad to watch and definitely want to buzz them off before the three judges....
In short, we were bored and flipping the channel constantly then found THIS.

The Dr. NoJob Show

I was so wrong to assume that deeply local TV could not be entertaining.

Marine Week Boston
This is also something from last month. On Monday, May 3, I was walking toward Public Garden and in the corner of my eye I caught something unusual. An aircraft in Boston Common! And not an ordinary one. It was a big tilt-rotor. As I got closer I noticed there were also helicopters, jeeps, tanks, and many Marine soldiers.
Later that day I saw this article on boston.com "The Osprey, Marine Corps tilt-rotor aircraft, visits Boston" and found out that it was an event called Marine Week Boston (official site).
During the Marine Week (May 3-9), Marine vehicles accompanied by Marine soldiers were on display at a couple of major sightseeing spots in Boston such as Boston Common, Faneuiel Hall (Quincy Market), and Copley Place (in front of the Trinity Church).
We went to the Common to take a close look at these vehicles.

They also had put up a couple of tents to set up booths to show their equipment. The most popular booth of course was...the one with guns. It was not just a showcase but you could actually touch and play with them. A lot of people, including kids, were lining up for it. It was somewhat disturbing to see teens and children holding big guns and being positively thrilled by the experience. But then, I have to admit that I was also curious and wanted to try them out.
This one below was taken the other day at Faneuiel Hall.

Duckling Day Parade
On Saturday, May 9, we observed Boston's annual event on Mother's Day, Duckling Day Parade.
Every year, parents and children walk the route the ducks took in the picture book Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. They start from Boston Common and go through Beacon Hill, then arrive at the Duck Pond of Public Garden. Children (and sometimes parents, too) are dressed as a character of the book, so mostly duck, and the occasional police officer. Kids in duck costumes are absolutely adorable.
We could not get good pictures but here are some.

Brimfield Antique Show
On Saturday, May 15, we went to the Brimfield Antique Show.
It is the largest outdoor antique show in the world and is held for 5 days, three times a year in Brimfield, MA. I had nudged Dr.A to take me to this event for months, actually for 8 months to be precise, because the last one was held in September and we missed it because Dr.A was in New Mexico at that time. I remember I whined a lot.
It was about an hour drive, and as we got closer to Brimfield I could see that so many other cars surrounding us were also heading to the same place. I started getting paranoid. "What if everybody is after what I want? Oh my god we will never find a parking spot." It of course was just my paranoia and we were fine.
Thousands of tents were spread along the main street, about a mile long on both sides. It is simply impossible to see all dealers in a day, but I was prepared! I had done a research on the whereabouts of dealers I wanted to visit, using the database and map provided by the show's website. One problem. Both the database and map were very old. At one point we walked half a mile to get to a subsection and found an entirely empty field. Joy.
But over all, it was fun. It was festive. Live music and food booths. There were some neat stuff and lots of junk (well looked like junk), and the distinct smell of antiques was everywhere.
We only took 3 photos there. I was too busy hunting.
An old fire-hose cart.

Very old but polished fire extinguishers.

My plunder =)

I am not an avid collector but I love these old milk glass. I think they are technically called collectibles, not old enough to be qualified as antique.
Speaking of antiques, there is an antique shop in New Mexico that we still talk about. We were visiting the city of Taos and there it was. I was hoping to find some milk glass but we saw nothing but...old tools for medical operations. Fake eyeballs. Pictures of people with deformed parts etc etc...
And the guy in the shop payed no attention to us, who were the only customers. He was staring at the computer screen, which looked like an auction site for more medical tools.
It was downright creepy.
