2010 is the 125th anniversary of the creation of the
Boston Pops and they gave a free concert, "
Pops in the Park", at Boston Common as the final event of their anniversary celebration series. Thankfully we found out about it the day before and managed to go see it. Although it was chilly with misty rain, many people were there to enjoy the concert.
I thought this could be short but it lasted a full 2-hours. Since we left in hurry and had no chairs or a blanket, I sat, kind of, without actually sitting on the wet ground. At the end my legs fell asleep.
Below is the list of the tunes they performed. Many are associated with Boston in some way, such as a reading/narration about the Kennedy brothers and Sweet Caroline, a must song for Red Sox games. They also played 3 tunes by Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), who once was a Harvard student and later composed wildly popular and famous music all over the world. His talent was found by the Boston Pops conductor at that time, and most of his works were introduced by Boston Pops. ...I did not know any of this before!
I suddenly felt like I needed to do something, like sweeping, while they played The Syncopated Clock. The reason for this is that it was played during the cleaning time at my elementary school (students have to clean their own classroom in Japan, a concept totally foreign to American students). I felt like moving and being active even more when they played Fiddle Faddle, a tune always played during the school running competitions.
I was particularly thrilled by the Star Wars theme. We had gone to see a film music concert directed by "the" John Williams a few years ago, and though it was a great experience I was little disappointed that they did not play this theme.
The conductor tried to cheer up the audience for the last of the program, the 70's sing-along, but for some reason not many people participated. I felt bad and I wonder why. Maybe it was too chilly to sing...or maybe the orchestra music was too beautifully coordinated...?
