Brimfield Antique Show

On Saturday, May 15, we went to the Brimfield Antique Show.

It is the largest outdoor antique show in the world and is held for 5 days, three times a year in Brimfield, MA. I had nudged Dr.A to take me to this event for months, actually for 8 months to be precise, because the last one was held in September and we missed it because Dr.A was in New Mexico at that time. I remember I whined a lot.

It was about an hour drive, and as we got closer to Brimfield I could see that so many other cars surrounding us were also heading to the same place. I started getting paranoid. "What if everybody is after what I want? Oh my god we will never find a parking spot." It of course was just my paranoia and we were fine.

Thousands of tents were spread along the main street, about a mile long on both sides. It is simply impossible to see all dealers in a day, but I was prepared! I had done a research on the whereabouts of dealers I wanted to visit, using the database and map provided by the show's website. One problem. Both the database and map were very old. At one point we walked half a mile to get to a subsection and found an entirely empty field. Joy.

But over all, it was fun. It was festive. Live music and food booths. There were some neat stuff and lots of junk (well looked like junk), and the distinct smell of antiques was everywhere.
We only took 3 photos there. I was too busy hunting.

An old fire-hose cart.

Very old but polished fire extinguishers.

My plunder =)

I am not an avid collector but I love these old milk glass. I think they are technically called collectibles, not old enough to be qualified as antique.

Speaking of antiques, there is an antique shop in New Mexico that we still talk about. We were visiting the city of Taos and there it was. I was hoping to find some milk glass but we saw nothing but...old tools for medical operations. Fake eyeballs. Pictures of people with deformed parts etc etc...
And the guy in the shop payed no attention to us, who were the only customers. He was staring at the computer screen, which looked like an auction site for more medical tools.
It was downright creepy.

Newport, RI

On Sunday we decided to go somewhere outside Massachusetts: Newport, RI.
It was a neat place, to me, a quintessential New England coastal town.
As we drove into the town there were lines of small shops, restaurants, and art galleries just like the other places near a beach.

But all we could think as we got off the car was nothing but to eat something.
We left relatively late, predictably, so by the time we got there all the energy from breakfast, I mean brunch, was gone.

We ended up eating at Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant, apparently the most popular diner in the town, if we trust the guidebook we brought with us. Most popular or not, this dish was really good.

A souvenir shop. Honesty is a valuable virtue...

We could not see much of the famous "Newport Mansions", since we were a touch late and could not make it to their closing time and it was hard to find parking spaces, but it was still neat just to see the exterior of huge mansions.

A view from the entrance of Breakers, the largest mansion in the area. Note the shadow of the gate...we saw the other side of the building when we took a wrong turn as we left (...always taking wrong turns...) and when a house is as big as this, you don't call it mansion. You call it castle. Incredibly huge.

Some pictures from Scenic Ocean Drive.

It may not be easy to see in photos, but these rocks have very neat bluish color.

Memorial Day Weekend

Our first day of the Memorial weekend was very quiet.
We drove to Medford finally to check out a new Japanese grocery store. There used to be one located in a very convenient spot in Cambridge, but it had closed last May. In the instant we entered this new store we were reminded of the old one, and in fact, some people working there were the same people from the old one!

Then we went for a walk in the evening.

20000 US flags were stuck on the hill of Boston Common, paying respect to the Massachusetts men and women who fell in service since WWI.

Public Garden

Cambridge Explores the Universe

The Center for Astrophysics holds this event "Cambridge Explores the Universe" (kind of an open house) every now and then, and we luckily visited the CfA at the right time, not really being aware of it.

We felt very fortunate to be able to see the inside of the Great Refractor, the largest telescope in the U.S. until 1867, since it is usually not open to public. But it was unfortunate that we did not have a camera with us. We took some pictures with our cell phones.

Details on the Great Refractor, if you are curious.

We walked to the Harvard Yard afterward, and found this.
