Back to the Light

I have neglected this blog so long, but now that Spring has arrived in Boston we have been more active and more posting should be coming here. Before I post Spring photos, however, first things first...I have posted the Winter photos that I intended to post months ago!

The first storm hit right after Christmas: December 26, 2010
We ventured out to catch the wrath of the snowstorm after midnight.

The New Year's Eve
It became unprecedentedly warm around the New Year's Eve, so much so that a lot of snow from the storm had melted away. Ice sculptures were also melting (you can see that the number 2 of 2011 is partially missing from the top of the ice plate). No heavy jacket or thick gloves needed this year. Such a huge change from a few years back, when the windchill dropped below single digits (Fahrenheit) so we could stay outside no longer than 15 minutes, even with full winter gear.

At the last minute we decided to go somewhere different this year for the countdown, and headed to the waterfront (where the aquarium is). We did not quite make it, but managed to see the fireworks.

The surface of the block of snow on cars gets icy due to the cold temperature, creating a shell like this. Digging the car out is always a pain, but this year was truly back-breaking.

Boston Massacre Reenactment

5 people shot!
Massacre!

Saturday, March 5
We missed the cute version done by kids earlier in the day, but here are some photos from the night of the reenactment of a milestone in American history.

Spectators surrounding the Old State House
Nice seat kid!
The audience was actively participating in the event, adding some tension, I believe...
Words thrown from these participants included:
"Lobster back!"
"Shoot him" "Shoot him now!" and of course, the chanting of
"USA! USA! USA!"

Unfortunately our view was mostly blocked... (we could hear the words of actors thanks to microphones).

My desperate attempt to see what was going on with the camera.

The Governor of the colony makes an announcement

Chuo Line Musashi-Koganei Station
I went to Koganei, Tokyo to see my friend who also was an exchange student at the university where I met Dr.A. It was a nice nostalgic trip taking the Chuo Line to go to the neighborhood of the university (and high school) I went to, except that the stations were totally, entirely renovated. I thought for a moment that I took a wrong line or something.

Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest
I met up with another friend in Jiyugaoka and went to this place called Sweets Forest, a building filled with sweets shops. We hopped from one to another, choosing not to think about weight and calories.

I also got cute mini rolled cakes like these. (*This photo is taken from their website)

Record of Japan (1/3)

A rough record of my Japan trip
Part 1: Home and the Neighborhood

One of the most fun to go back to Japan is food (almost a purpose). The best of all is of course my mother's cooking.

We went to a town called Tokigawa, a tiny sightseeing place about 40 minutes drive from home, and had this soba (buck wheat) noodle & uncommon tempura assortment (maple leaf, yuzu, or Japanese citron, figs, chrysanthemum etc.)

Merry Christmas! ...and Happy...Belated Halloween...

I found an entry about Halloween in Beacon Hill that I could not update before I left for Japan and I almost chucked it since it felt too out of date, but the pictures are still fun to look at. The rich people in the community put quite a serious effort into this event. I created an online album so if you are interested, go take a look!

The entry written way back in November
This year fall has being leaving rather quickly and we felt it on the night of Halloween. It was reportedly the coldest Halloween in many years ...but that did not discourage little monsters to hunt candy. I finally managed to gather the photos of Halloween in Beacon Hill, the best Trick-or-Treating spot in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe. The residents put a lot of efforts and the reputation is deserved. In fact, while walking through a huge crowd of kids AND adults in costumes, we heard somebody say, "wow, it [Halloween] must be a huge pressure for the residents!"

Back to Boston

For anyone who had wondered if this blog would ever be updated again (I wondered about that too), here it is....
Anyway, I am back in Boston after 3 weeks of re-charging in Japan. I immediately noticed upon my return that winter is back in full force and the town has been covered with Christmas spirits.

Wednesday, December 22
We went to this year's office Christmas party. It is very casual, held at the student hall with plastic cutlery, buffet style, but the foods are always nice and who could resist free beer (and wine)? It also has been a good opportunity for me to get to know people at Dr.A's work.
