Squirrel Frenzy

Saturday, September 25

We went to Public Garden to meet our furry friends. I finally succeeded to fulfill my dream: hand feed Chippy!

I gave this guy a chestnut.

Dr.A gave a walnut to this squirrel that took it so quickly I could not catch the moment with the camera.

We walked around and found this one with a walnut, perching at the tree root. We wondered where it had found it. Then we heard a lady holding a plastic bag, calling out to squirrels, "Rusty! Rusty! It's dinner time!"

We looked around and every single squirrel we could find had a walnut.
I so love squirrels. How cute. When I handed the nut, the squirrel's claws brushed my finger. They were dry and sharp. Although I knew it would be just like that, it was slightly disappointing....I had dreamed of furry cute squirrel claws.

Return to Rockport (2/2)

After the lunch we walked through Bear Skin Neck. The streets and alleys were filled with cute buildings, which were mainly cafes and souvenir shops that got me instantly excited.

At the base of Bear Skin Neck (A)

Heading to the tail end of the Neck

A pirate ship has come! (B)

Looking at the tail end of the Neck (C)

A famous? building called "Motif 1" (D)

We wrapped up our day trip with a scoop of ice cream

Rockport was truly enjoyable. Not too far from Boston, nice views, and a good size to look around.

Return to Rockport (1/2)

Saturday, September 18

We went back to Rockport to see the town through which we accidentally passed two weeks ago. It was a nice change to have a perfectly pleasant weather this time. Cute shops stood on the both sides of the main street, and you can see the ocean right behind it. After browsing several shops and taking a look at the sea, we headed to the restaurant to have lunch. It was a huge meal but we cleared the plates without difficulty.

Lunch at the Roy Moore Fish Shack Restaurant
"Beware of Attack Waitress-Restricted Area"

Appetizer
New England Clam Chowder and Coconut Shrimp

Main dish

Saint Anthony's Feast

We have had several very hot days in the last few months, and now we feel that summer is leaving quickly... the temperature has been staying around 65F recently, and there is a hint of leaves changing their colors.

August 28

On the last Saturday of August, when it was still hot, we drove by the North End and saw a crowd and tents. A brief search on the internet at home revealed that it was Saint Anthony's Feast, a 3 day celebration that has been held in North End since 1919, now the largest Italian-street festival in New England. The main event, which was going to be on the 29th, is called Grand Procession of Anthony, which people carry the statue of St.Anthony of Padua throughout the streets of North End for 10 hours.

I personally have no knowledge of Saint Anthony or the history behind this whole thing, but as far as I could see on its official website, the festival looked huge and lively. Apparently people all over the country come to join this event. We also found out that they offer entertainment such as live music and fireworks. We went to check them out.

We saw a group of people carrying the picture of St.Anthony with a music band in the middle of the main street. It was not a parade. While these people, and onlookers, were stopping the traffic, cars waited patiently.

At the main site consisting of several streets, various tents lined up and there was a huge crowd. We went further down a street, and at one point it was so packed I got scared it might cause a panic. I could see that some tents were selling unusually gorgeous meals like lobster rolls and octopus/squid salad, representing the nature of North End where lots of restaurants gather, but we were just desperate to get out. We managed to buy some fried dough and left the area.

We had heard that there would be fireworks at 9pm, so we headed to the place in time, waited and waited. No fireworks. Finally we gave up and walked away, and after a while, guess what? Behind us, we heard fireworks going! We could see most of it but we were upset that we left the best spot to see them.

Sunday August 29

We came back to North End to see the procession in the afternoon. We figured that the church where the procession begins would be madly crowded (it is in the main area), so decided to wander till we met the statue. No luck. We ate at our favorite restaurant (! music turns on at the index page) and came back.

Octopus salad
Potatoes, celery & cherry tomatoes
(Wait, I don't see cherry tomatoes...)

Special of the Day (It was touch spicy)
Squid ink pasta, lobster tail, shrimp, tomatoes

Penne Puttanesca
Tomatoes, capers, olives & anchovies salsa

Rockport Report (3/3)

3: Man at the Wheel

Almost right at the moment we got in the car and closed the door, the rain started pouring. We drove toward the center of the town, and soon, we saw shops and restaurants ahead. We were also looking forward to seeing some boats. We drove and drove but didn't find any parking! Heavy rain. We felt we were leaving the town, and we realized we had.

The town was already behind us, so what can we do? For a second we thought of going back, but instead we decided to stop by the Fisherman's Memorial Cenotaph in Gloucester, the place featured in the movie "The Perfect Storm" which I heard is a very, very boring movie starring George Clooney.

Man at the Wheel

In front of Man at the Wheel the stone panels list the names of those who died at sea since 1716

Note the very first two names... do you have anyone related in Gloucester, MA?

After taking some pictures, we headed back to Boston, swearing to come back to Rockport soon. Hopefully it will be sunny next time and we can walk around the town rather than just quickly passing by in the car. Still, this was a nice trip. Throughout this trip, being in the seaside town with the drizzly weather reminded us of Dr.A's hometown.

3: Man at the Wheel

Rockport Report (2/3)

2: Halibut Point State Park

We started from the park entrance, a tunnel made of trees. I was instantly thrilled. We walked through a wet grove for a while, and emerged by a quarry. The park is on the former site of the Babson Farm Quarry, which was closed in 1929 when the Cape Ann granite industry collapsed during the opening of the great depression.  It is now filled with water and appears to be a haven for wild birds. I had never seen a quarry before: it was amazing to see such a large pond made of artificially cut stones and filled rainwater.

The Entrance

Quarry

The visitor center stood nearby. At first I thought it was an uniquely shaped old lighthouse. We found out that it was a restored World War II fire-control tower. It would have been neat to climb the tower but it was off limits to the public except for a few occasions.

Walking along the quarry, we continued to see the Grout Pile, a scenic overlook.

Views from the top of the pile

We went down to the rocky seashore.

Looking up where we were standing from the shore. A mountain of rocks.

Rocky ledges

It was hard to walk on these rocks and some parts were very slippery, too. It was fun nonetheless. We could have stayed here longer, but the rain started gaining strength, so we retreated to the car and headed to the town ...or so we thought....

2: Halibut Point

Rockport Report (1/3)

Sunday, August 22
1: The Lobster Hut

It was a drizzly day, yet we were determined to go see Rockport, MA. We just wanted to browse this seaside town north of Boston, about 45 minute drive away, but we also had another ultimate goal. Lobster rolls.

Just as usual, we left Boston rather late and by the time we got there we were starving. ......Am I the only one thinking I write the same thing every time I make a post about our short trip? Anyway, we decided the first thing to do in Rockport was to fulfill our primary goal. We drove further out of the center of the town to head to the restaurant in mind.

After driving a while, I was getting worried we had taken a wrong turn or something. The neighborhood seemed like a residential area and the houses started thinning out. Then, when there was no other houses at all, a shack came into our view. Its roof was decorated with lobster pictures and lobster cages. How unmistakable. This must be our lobster hut! I mean, The Lobster Pool Restaurant!

Lobster Rolls and Fried Squid

Despite the drizzly, chilly weather and its location, it was moderately crowded.  It would have been nice to eat at the outside table, with a good view of the ocean, but not this time. As you can see the food was simple, but satisfying.

With our goal achieved we started off to the nearby state park: Halibut Point State Park.
