We have had several very hot days in the last few months, and now we feel that summer is leaving quickly... the temperature has been staying around 65F recently, and there is a hint of leaves changing their colors.
August 28
On the last Saturday of August, when it was still hot, we drove by the North End and saw a crowd and tents. A brief search on the internet at home revealed that it was Saint Anthony's Feast, a 3 day celebration that has been held in North End since 1919, now the largest Italian-street festival in New England. The main event, which was going to be on the 29th, is called Grand Procession of Anthony, which people carry the statue of St.Anthony of Padua throughout the streets of North End for 10 hours.
I personally have no knowledge of Saint Anthony or the history behind this whole thing, but as far as I could see on
its official website, the festival looked huge and lively. Apparently people all over the country come to join this event. We also found out that they offer entertainment such as live music and fireworks. We went to check them out.
We saw a group of people carrying the picture of St.Anthony with a music band in the middle of the main street. It was not a parade. While these people, and onlookers, were stopping the traffic, cars waited patiently.
At the main site consisting of several streets, various tents lined up and there was a huge crowd. We went further down a street, and at one point it was so packed I got scared it might cause a panic. I could see that some tents were selling unusually gorgeous meals like lobster rolls and octopus/squid salad, representing the nature of North End where lots of restaurants gather, but we were just desperate to get out. We managed to buy some fried dough and left the area.
We had heard that there would be fireworks at 9pm, so we headed to the place in time, waited and waited. No fireworks. Finally we gave up and walked away, and after a while, guess what? Behind us, we heard fireworks going! We could see most of it but we were upset that we left the best spot to see them.
Sunday August 29
We came back to North End to see the procession in the afternoon. We figured that the church where the procession begins would be madly crowded (it is in the main area), so decided to wander till we met the statue. No luck. We ate at
our favorite restaurant (! music turns on at the index page) and came back.
