Rockport Report (2/3)

2: Halibut Point State Park

We started from the park entrance, a tunnel made of trees. I was instantly thrilled. We walked through a wet grove for a while, and emerged by a quarry. The park is on the former site of the Babson Farm Quarry, which was closed in 1929 when the Cape Ann granite industry collapsed during the opening of the great depression.  It is now filled with water and appears to be a haven for wild birds. I had never seen a quarry before: it was amazing to see such a large pond made of artificially cut stones and filled rainwater.

The Entrance

Quarry

The visitor center stood nearby. At first I thought it was an uniquely shaped old lighthouse. We found out that it was a restored World War II fire-control tower. It would have been neat to climb the tower but it was off limits to the public except for a few occasions.

Walking along the quarry, we continued to see the Grout Pile, a scenic overlook.

Views from the top of the pile

We went down to the rocky seashore.

Looking up where we were standing from the shore. A mountain of rocks.

Rocky ledges

It was hard to walk on these rocks and some parts were very slippery, too. It was fun nonetheless. We could have stayed here longer, but the rain started gaining strength, so we retreated to the car and headed to the town ...or so we thought....

2: Halibut Point

Rockport Report (1/3)

Sunday, August 22
1: The Lobster Hut

It was a drizzly day, yet we were determined to go see Rockport, MA. We just wanted to browse this seaside town north of Boston, about 45 minute drive away, but we also had another ultimate goal. Lobster rolls.

Just as usual, we left Boston rather late and by the time we got there we were starving. ......Am I the only one thinking I write the same thing every time I make a post about our short trip? Anyway, we decided the first thing to do in Rockport was to fulfill our primary goal. We drove further out of the center of the town to head to the restaurant in mind.

After driving a while, I was getting worried we had taken a wrong turn or something. The neighborhood seemed like a residential area and the houses started thinning out. Then, when there was no other houses at all, a shack came into our view. Its roof was decorated with lobster pictures and lobster cages. How unmistakable. This must be our lobster hut! I mean, The Lobster Pool Restaurant!

Lobster Rolls and Fried Squid

Despite the drizzly, chilly weather and its location, it was moderately crowded.  It would have been nice to eat at the outside table, with a good view of the ocean, but not this time. As you can see the food was simple, but satisfying.

With our goal achieved we started off to the nearby state park: Halibut Point State Park.

Oishii Sushi Bar

Saturday, August 21

I have known for 2 years that there is a sushi bar that people are raving over, and we finally decided to try it out. It is in a suburban area called Chestnut Hill which is about a 25 minute ride on the Greenline T. On its wall were many "Best of..." certificates given by various gourmet magazines, proving their high reviews. It is a very tiny restaurant...only one table and about 10 seats at the counter. I have heard that sometimes it takes more than an hour to get seated if crowded, but luckily it took no time for us to get our seats at the counter, probably because we got there before 5pm.

On my right, 2 women. The one seated further away seemed incredibly relaxed, leaning over the counter, resting her head on her hand, and giving a speech about something loudly. No chance for the other woman next to me to even think about inserting a word. On the left in front of Dr.A, who sat at the corner, were 3 boys. Literally they all looked like 15-16 years old. This is not a cheap restaurant....how in the h.. I forced myself to avert my glance and looked into the menu.

There were plenty of choices, including dishes we don't see so often such as Foie Gras sushi and Lobster tempura sushi. After a while we choose these:

Hamachi Cone (basically a roll)

Salmon Sashimi with Yuzu Honey

Tokyo Style Soft Shell Crab Roll

I do not know why they call this Tokyo style, maybe because of the sweet sauce, but it was tasty nonetheless. The white wrapping is a very thinly sliced daikon: a kind of radish.

Super Deluxe Sushi Platter

Oh my god, at end the lady was still talking and her companion still hadn't spoken.  The boys had left, and a group of 6 or so came to the nearby table. One of them with a British accent started giving his theories about good sushi and sushi bars loudly and without a pause. ...Is he seriously teaching his friends what sushi is, in front of 4 sushi chefs? ...I wish, at the very least, that he could pronounce "edamame" correctly.

Anyway the sushi was great. I thought they could chill the sushi a bit more, but we are definitely going back. On the return trip, we enjoyed walking and took some pictures of the Chustnut Hill T station.

Farewell Party

On Sunday, August 15, we went to a farewell party for Dr.A's coworker who was leaving the office and going back to the Netherlands. I usually don't like gatherings because I get really nervous about meeting new people especially when I have to speak English only, but since I have met the hosts and all of the guests except for a few, who I have at least heard of from Dr.A, I did not have much anxiety.

They are a very pleasant group of people to chat with. 10 out of total 12 people (plus the leaving coworker's baby who charmed everybody) were all scientists, yet nobody used any academic jargon. By the way, the professor, his wife, and Dr.A were the only Americans there. The group well represented the global aspect of the working environment in astronomy.

It was held at the garden of the house of Dr.A's boss near Walden Pond, which is famous as the site of Henry David Thoreau's cabin. He lived there for 2 years (1845-1847) and is considered the original hippie (quote from Dr.A).

After the wonderful lunch and dessert, the professor guided us to Walden Pond. We have heard that it would be a 15 minutes walk, but didn't know that it would be a walk through the woods. We went into the woods right away, walking down a shelving slope full of pine corns and filled with powdery dirt, I soon regretted that I wore sandals.

Suddenly we came out to a clearing. On both sides we saw the river behind the house.

The other side of the river. A tiny house on the right is a stone boathouse.

I was thrilled at these beautiful wild flowers. But after crossed the river my excitement was soon replaced by a slight sense of shock, as I watched the professor march into the meadow filled with tall untamed grass. I saw a flashback of the opening sequence of the good old TV drama "Little House on the Prairie" where Laura and her sister were running down the grassy hill...

After that, we went into the woods again, and walked and walked. I could see Dr.A's black shoes and blue pants getting dustier and dustier. In the woods we heard a tremendous noise, which turned out to be the commuter rail train thundering by. We took this photo soon after it passed.

We crossed the railroad tracks and Walden Pond was directly in front of us. It was beautiful, and....I could not believe I did not take a single photo of the pond! No pond photos at all. Well, it's probably because Dr.A and I had visited the pond 3 years ago with my mother and we felt like we knew the place. This means there are no photos of the Thoreau cabin as well, but you are not missing anything, because there is nothing at the cabin site save a small plaque and a few stones from the fireplace. I remember, 3 years ago, the three of us cracked up at the sight of nothingness after a very long walk along the pond.

Walden Pond (taken in fall 2007)

It was a tougher trip than I thought, but it was definitely a beautiful one. I enjoyed it a lot. When we finally returned to the house, we were treated with this delicious fresh watermelon juice made by the hostess.

Galileoscope!

We have received a Galileoscope!

I wonder how many people were aware of it, but the year 2009 was the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first astronomical observation with a telescope and was set as an International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) to celebrate astronomy. Many special events were held all over the world, and come to think of it, the Museum of Science here must have been doing something about it. Now that it is 2010, it's just too late.

The Galileoscope was developed as a part of IYA2009 celebrations. Dr.A decided to get it himself after his boss brought one to the office, and we finally received it about 2 months after he ordered it. We were seriously starting to get worried that it would never come.

As you can see on the box, it is actually a refractor kit. A nice educational tool.

So it comes all in pieces like IKEA furniture

Although the outer plastic parts look somewhat cheap, for a $30 telescope it's got very high quality lenses, according to Dr.A.

Done! It took Dr.A no time to assemble. Inside the tiny plastic bag is a sticker warning not to look at the sun with the Galileoscope.

You can mount it on a tripod, too. (A tripod is not included in the kit)

Apparently the overall quality of this telescope is quite impressive, considering its price. I had never had a telescope myself, I looked into it and...very blurry. It is hard to focus anything in the living room and besides, I could barely hold it still no matter how still I thought I was standing. Good thing we have a tripod. Dr.A adjusted the magnification for me and I looked into it again, then I found....an upside down, magnified door nob of the bedroom....I never knew everything becomes upside down when looked through a telescope.

The Galileoscope website

When I was checking several IYA2009 related websites to write this entry, I found that the Japanese had sold 2 different kinds of Galileoscopes on their official website. They look so much cooler...! But it makes sense, they both cost around $2000...and they were sold out...!

Troquet

I did not think it was possible but I have pushed my mastery of the art of procrastination even further than before. I have several updates to do.

The first and probably the best of all the events we've had recently is the dinner at Troquet on Saturday, July 31. Troquet is the best restaurant we have ever been to in Boston, they serve absolutely fantastic food. We found that last year it received a "platinum plate", the best honor given by the local TV program which introduces restaurants all over New England, and they surely deserve it.

Unfortunately having dinner at Troquet is not cheap and we are not able to come to this place as often as we like, but on every lucky occasion Dr.A and I ate here, we felt that it was worth paying every penny. This time, we had a wonderful full-course dinner with wine thanks to Dr.A's mother and step father, who gave us a gift certificate as a birthday gift to Dr.A. Yes, I was a total free rider, and a happy one.

Appetizer
New Zealand Langoustines
feuille de bric, cucumber and Champagne mango chutney

Spanish Octopus Escabeche
fennel, sweet peppers and arbequina olive oil

Entree
Nantucket Sea Scallops
Asparagus, flowering herbs, morels and crème fraiche

Oops, too blurry.
A Duck dish that I could no longer find the name on the menu online

 Dessert
Honey Crisp Peach Tarte Tatin
candied walnuts, vanilla ice cream and sweet peach puree

Milk Chocolate Truffle Tart
crusted hazelnuts, banana ice cream and caramel sauce

Everything was just great, I especially liked the octopus salad and duck dish. They were unbelievable.

Happy Birthday, Dr.A!

July 19 was our Dr.A's birthday [applause]! .....As well as the birthday of my favorite guitarist of all time, Brian May of Queen, who also happens to have Ph.D in astrophysics (trivia for Jeopardy here). Usually I just give him a gift and we both go to a nice restaurant on the weekend, but the weekend was so far away (the 19th was on a Monday) and I had a secret plan this year... No, not an original idea at all, it was classic: a slightly gorgeous surprise dinner, all Dr.A's favorites.

I was proud that I had come up with this somewhat mediocre yet nice gesture long before this day and successfully sneaked some essential food items into the basket full of other stuff when we went to a Japanese market 2 days earlier (I am so lucky he loves Japanese food). But I still needed other things especially a gift, so my plan of the day went like this. I would go get a gift that I had in mind in the morning, then go to Wholefoods to get some missing ingredients. Clean the room and start cooking...maybe around 4pm...assuming he would be back about 7pm.

When I map things out too much something always go wrong. I still don't know exactly what happened, but  everything was totally behind schedule. At 4pm I was shopping at Wholefoods and thinking, what is wrong with me? I was almost panicking when I started cooking at 6. I was desperate to know when Dr.A came home so I sent 3 or 4 texts to him, asking to warn me when he left his office as though such behavior never gives anybody a hint on his/her birthday.

But alas, I must have grown two more arms or something, by 8pm I had everything done and ready including the cake, and Dr.A had not left the office. Now I even had to worry about keeping dinner fresh.

One thing I failed to remember is Dr.A's ability to get absorbed into his project. He had a paper due and was really focused on it. So much for my newly grown two arms...Dr.A came back after 10 o'clock pm! I was so happy he came back so I could finally eat!! Well that's only half true, I was happy to see that he was mildly surprised at the unusual dinner table and that he seemed to enjoy the food a lot.

Again, Happy Birthday, Dr.A!
